Between the glitter of winter and the scent of spring comes February, a month full of festivals and events which keep London lively and our spirits up. Here at the Portman, we’re already looking forward to the colourful February festivities of the Magic Lanterns and St. Valentine’s Day, both of which promise February fun in London:
Magic Lantern Festival, from January 19th to February 26th 2017
With fantastic combinations of light and colour, art and culture, “Explore The Silk Road” is the theme for 2017’s London Magic Lantern Festival. This display of lanterns from around the world demonstrates global trade routes and cultures as the event adds light to those dull in-between days of the waning winter.
St. Valentine’s Day, Tuesday 14th February 2017
St. Valentine’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year, presenting an excellent opportunity to break up the week with a romantic rendezvous. As well as having the chance to dine à deux by candlelight from our own fine restaurant menu, wider London also brings plenty of date-night delights for couples or those who want to vary their Valentine’s:
Kew Gardens Orchid Flower Festival from 4th February through to 5th March 2017 includes wonderful displays of this exotic and erotic bloom, complete with a multi-sensory Indian backdrop of lights, music, colour, yoga and refreshments. Late-night ticketed events run from 9th February and include Tuesday 14th for a vibrant valentine’s visit.
Sunset at the Shard – watch Valentine’s Day become Valentine’s night from the dedicated viewing platform of this iconic London landmark.
Valentine’s Late Night at Keats House – love and poetry literally go hand-in-hand at Keats House in Keats Grove on Saturday 11th February 2017. This is a ticket-only event offering a real romantic treat for London lovers.
This year’s acclaimed alternative to the hearts and flowers of traditional Valentine’s events looks set to be the Tower of London’s Romance is Dead event on Monday 13th February, where amateur artists and interested visitors can explore Anne Boleyn’s tragic tale of love by sketching within the very site of Anne’s burial.
London Fashion Week Festival, 23rd to 26th February 2017
Find out all about the latest trends in togs, styles in suits and designs for dresses at The Store, 2017’s vibrant venue for London Fashion Week festival. Held the weekend immediately after fashion week (17th to 21st February) this festival is a must-visit for keeping up to day with the latest London look.
Shrove Tuesday, 28th February 2017
In 2017 Shrove Tuesday comes at the end of the month but still offers traditional fun across the city:
Parliamentary Pancake Race – the fantastic combination of politicians, peers and pancakes gets going from 10 am outside the Houses of Parliament and offers flippin’ good fun for the whole family.
The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race – another charity-fundraiser with teams of four battering their way to glory in this traditional race. Events start from 12.30 pm at Bricklane, Whitechapel.
With all of these exciting London events to enjoy, we’d love to hear about your February fun as well as offer you drinks or dinner, so don’t forget to pop into The Portman too!
